FAIR DINKUM MANJIT
Half-hour documentary
Australia 2006
Produced & Directed by Faramarz K-Rahber
In March 2005, filmmaker Faramarz K-Rahber stepped into Manjit's cab and learned about this cabbie's multicultural message and his dream of making a Bollywood video clip for his popular track Song Australia. Faramarz immediately decided to try and make Manjit's dream come true. The documentary Fair Dinkum Manjit tells the entertaining story of how it all came about.
FAIR DINKUM MANJIT is an entertaining documentary about Manjit Boparai, a Brisbane cab driver who describes himself as a patriotic, fair dinkum, curry-munching Aussie!
Emigrating from India in 1988, Manjit quickly set about building a better future for himself and his family when arriving in Australia. Originally a school teacher and an author, he took up driving taxis when moving to Brisbane in the mid-1990s.
Although his day-job revolves around driving his cab around the streets of Brisbane, his true calling is telling the world what a great and diverse country Australia really is.
His great passion for Australia inspired him to record a music album in honour of his adopted country. Now everyone who steps into his cab gets to enjoy his patriotic message of harmony and goodwill through his Indian-flavoured music.
It's a ride no one forgets in a hurry!
For the last three years, Manjit has been playing (and singing!) his most popular track, 'Song Australia', to his cab customers. The response has been so great that the song, along with Manjit himself, has become a local icon. He reckons he has sold over 2000 CDs from his cab and he frequently features on local radio and television. He even counts Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Queensland State Premier Peter Beattie among his supporters!
But now he has his eyes on something even bigger. Convinced that 'Song Australia' deserves to be on everyone's lips, he has decided to make a pop version of the song, complete with a colourful Bollywood-style video clip.
As preparations for the new song version & video clip gets underway, the question is:
is Manjit the singing cabbie headed for nation-wide fame?
